Copyright in Italy
According to the Italian law, copyright protects intellectual works having a creative nature, e.g. software, literary works, music, dramatic and figurative art works.
Copyright automatically originates from the creation of the work, and (with a few exceptions), has duration of 70 years after the author’s death.
In order to make the protection of copyright more effective (in particular, to establish an unquestionable starting date of the copyright) the law provides that intellectual works to be protected can be filed at the competent Offices, which (depending of the kind of work) are either SIAE (Società Italiana Autori ed Editori) or the Ministero dei Beni Culturali.
In particular, software must be filed at the Public Register of the Software, held by SIAE.
